Maple has 2 designs, representing 2 different time periods in their life. The first is their shorter purple hair with a green jacket, and the second is when they have longer, faded blue hair. These time periods go alongside two different partners she had, Renata and Magpie, respectively.
In Maple's late teens, he was intending to earn a MFA. His art was mostly inspired by the outdoors, and her work was primarily an oil and acrylic paint. In their free time, they would go on walks in the wilderness and urban exploration, until Renata was severely injured.
Maple felt he was responsible for what happened to Renata, and led them to feel as if they had to isolate from everyone and everything. About a year later, Maple had been working at a café, and forms an increasingly closer relationship with Maggie, who later becomes their queer-platonic partner. Realizing they have difficulties socializing and forming relationships (with the exception of Maggie), Maple drops out of his program a few months before graduating, believing that he would be incapable of carrying out a job in creating art.
